I have a visable tat on my ankle and it has not been an issue where I work (I am a Law Librarian at a large firm), but as much as I want a facial piercing it would be a no-no. There was an IT tech who worked her a few years ago with a tongue piercing and he was told to "take it out".

My tats aren't visible but my labret is pierced and I've been thinking about getting my nose done. I would hate to get a piercing, get attached and then be made to take it out. I live in San Francisco and was hoping this libral town could handle a brillant woman with a few extra holes in her head.

I don't have tats or piercings, but I love to play with henna and wear pagan jewelery. I'm also an elementary school librarian and the director of the local public library. Nobody bothers me.

I think if you're circumspect with what you choose to show and don't deliberately call attention to it , you'll be okay. People just look at me funny and then make a point of ignore the issue completely.

But then, it could also be my age. People aren't as comfortable telling 35+somethings what to do about their personal habits as they are with younger people. One of the happy sides of maturity.

I have 3 tats -- 2 very visible. I've never had problems with them. I'm now working in a conservative environment. The only time people mention it is when they want to see them. I've always gotten compliments.

Pre my private gig I was an Associate Director at city public library. I've also been a college librarian. The students dug it. It made me more approachable.

          Right on!
