Well, I've been disheartened about the job market for library paraprofessional jobs. I've been a circulation clerk for most of my employed life, yet it seems that there's just so many other people out there with more experience for the few jobs that open up. And I'm afraid that my resume doesn't have that much else to it for other work.
I don't it's just sad, everywhere I see libraries struggling. I don't even know if I'd want to pursue an MLIS at this point.
Anyway, I was just hoping maybe some life could return to this tribe.

Re: I guess we're all too busy to post
Thu, January 6, 2005 - 3:24 PMI just graduated with my MLIS and I'm beginning to see a lot of job openings. In the next couple of years there will be millions of librarians who will retire. So don't be dis-heartened by what you see around you. Maybe the area your living in has been saturated. Have you considered moving? A great way to keep with the business in general is to look at the ALA website or magazines like "American Libraries" and "Library Journal" these resources have job listings in each area of librarianship like Special, Public, and Academic. Well good luck! -

Re: I guess we're all too busy to post
Thu, January 6, 2005 - 3:27 PMThat's some good advice. Yeah, Portland is sucking really bad for work...unless you want to work for slave wages in a call center.
Moving? Yeah, I'd consider it...but it'd have to be to somewhere that is transgender friendly. And I'd have some money. -

Re: I guess we're all too busy to post
Fri, January 7, 2005 - 10:00 AMCome to San Francisco!
There are a ton of community colleges, public libraries, law firms and universities that all need librarians. Although that doesn't mean a plethora of library jobs at all times, we need young blood in the library world, and SF happens to be very transgender friendly.
cheers! -

Re: I guess we're all too busy to post
Sat, January 8, 2005 - 9:57 PMThere was an ad in "American Libraries" advertising for the New York Public Library system. All you have to do is send your resume in. You could visit their website for more information.

Re: I guess we're all too busy to post
Wed, March 2, 2005 - 3:50 PMDon't give up! According to "the literature", there will be about a zillion librarians retiring between now and 2014. Hence, it is a good time to be a librarian. I'm hoping to finish my MLIS this summer - just have a practicum to do then. I just resigned from an art & architecture library - I feel like such a slacker, but actually, I'm working my butt off in library school, so that makes up for lack of employment I suppose. Feel free to agree at any time! ;-) -

Thu, March 3, 2005 - 8:19 PMPre-Congratulations too you! Doesn't it piss you off when people call the MLISc a Mickey mouse masters? They don't know how getting the degree entails as much work as any graduate degree. Good luck with the practicum,I find them to be more educational than the actual LIS classes. If you want to get out of library school faster you can't do it being employed.(That's my motto.) That's was my route and I got out in a year and half.
