I am an erotic horror author, and I want to donate copies of my work to libraries. What libraries in the US do goths frequent? I appreciate your help!

Alabama Bill Targets Gay Authors
MONTGOMERY, Ala., April 26, 2005

A college production tells the story of Matthew Sheppard, a student beaten to death because he was gay.

And soon, it could be banned in Alabama.

Republican Alabama lawmaker Gerald Allen says homosexuality is an unacceptable lifestyle. As CBS News Correspondent Mark Strassmann reports, under his bill, public school libraries could no longer buy new copies of plays or books by gay authors, or about gay characters.

"I don't look at it as censorship," says State Representative Gerald Allen. "I look at it as protecting the hearts and souls and minds of our children."

Books by any gay author would have to go: Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and Gore Vidal. Alice Walker's novel "The Color Purple" has lesbian characters.

Allen originally wanted to ban even some Shakespeare. After criticism, he narrowed his bill to exempt the classics, although he still can't define what a classic is. Also exempted now Alabama's public and college libraries.

Librarian Donna Schremser fears the "thought police," would be patrolling her shelves.

"And so the idea that we would have a pristine collection that represents one political view, one religioius view, that's not a library,'' says Schremser.

"I think it's an absolutely absurd bill," says Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

First Amendment advocates say the ban clearly does amount to censorship.

"It's a Nazi book burning," says Potok. "You know, it's a remarkable piece of work."

But in book after book, Allen reads what he calls the "homosexual agenda,"
and he's alarmed.

"It's not healthy for America, it doesn't fit what we stand for," says Allen. "And they will do whatever it takes to reach their goal."

He says he sees this as a line in the sand.

In Alabama's legislature, the reviews of Allen's bill are still out on whether to lower this curtain for good.

Hi, you goth librarians you. I'm new to this site, and was really excited to find this tribe.

I work at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester MA, and I'm certainly the only one there with an MLS *and* a tongue ring. So what kinds of libraries do you all work in, and where? What are some of the issues you're dealing with (or trying not to deal with) at work right now? And how about favorite books, or books and movies about librarians? I've recently read The Time Traveller's Wife, and I recommend it if you haven't checked it out yet.

Well I just wanted to introduce myself, and try to get some posting going. I hope to hear from some of you soon!

Jen

Well, I've been disheartened about the job market for library paraprofessional jobs. I've been a circulation clerk for most of my employed life, yet it seems that there's just so many other people out there with more experience for the few jobs that open up. And I'm afraid that my resume doesn't have that much else to it for other work.

I don't it's just sad, everywhere I see libraries struggling. I don't even know if I'd want to pursue an MLIS at this point.

Anyway, I was just hoping maybe some life could return to this tribe.

Career test

I took a career test once and it said that my best career choices, based on my personality are, librarian or s/w programmer. I took to the latter but always wondered what it would be like to be a librarian.

I have a library of my own, probably about 1,000 pounds of stuff (I know because I carried the 12 eighty pound boxes through several moves) spread over a 6x6 area of bookshelving. What's ended up in the library though are some antiques (funny books from the thirties) and books about panelology (graphic novels, strip art) and my favorite stuff, line art of faeries, trolls and elves.

Given these interests what direction do you think I can go to expand this collection? Do any of you collect? Do you buy collections and sift out what you want, selling the rest?

What's in your library?

Poem of the week.

Taken on a careless day all within a moment
With no means to get away or possible atonement
Freely she caresses, assuring me the struggle should be suspended
As she spins silken stays and has me strung upended.

“My children must eat, you must agree
to be their meal rather than be free
And this robe I’m making you, no king could ever own
With freshest silver threads and gossamer lining sown.”

The stillness in my being from her kiss still stinging
I sway to her submitting and this garment fitting.

Soon a warm and waiting fare, soften and poised
Hanging in mid air becoming paranoid.

Wrapped in my silken gown there’s really not much to do
Except to wait for a hundred baby mouths to chew
Tearing at your hem coming for their feast
Though at first you only hear them on a thousand tiny feet.
